Where to Hang a Bird House So Birds Actually Use It
bird housesA bird house in the wrong spot just sits there empty. Birds are picky about where they'll nest - but the rules are simple once you know them.
Height matters more than you'd think
Hang the house at least 2 to 3 metres off the ground. Too low, and cats or other animals can reach it easily. Small birds like sparrows and finches also simply feel safer nesting higher up, away from ground-level activity.
Face it away from the harsh afternoon sun
An entrance facing east or northeast catches the gentle morning sun and stays cooler through the hot afternoon. A house facing west, into the full force of the afternoon sun, can get uncomfortably warm inside during Indian summers.
Keep the entrance hole small
A small, round entrance hole, sized for sparrows and finches, is a good thing, not a limitation - it keeps bigger birds and predators out while small birds can still get in easily. Don't be tempted to make it wider.
Wall-mounted or hanging - both work
A wall-mounted house with a lock stays steady in wind and is easy to check on. A hanging house on rope is simpler to put up on a balcony or tree branch with no drilling, and it's easy to move if birds don't take to the first spot after a few weeks.
Give it some cover, but not too much
A little tree cover or an overhang nearby gives birds a sense of safety and shelter from rain. But avoid spots buried deep in thick leaves, where predators (or a neighbourhood cat) can sneak up unseen.
Once birds move in, leave them be
Once you see birds visiting regularly, resist the urge to keep checking inside. Being disturbed too often is one of the most common reasons a nest gets abandoned. Save any cleaning for after the breeding season, using a back or side door that opens without touching the nest.
Be patient
It can take a few weeks, sometimes longer, for birds to find and trust a new house. If nothing happens in the first month, try moving it before you assume it won't work - a small change in height or direction is often all it takes.
